Interleague Play

In a column on FoxSports.com, John Paul Morosi gives his take on the popularity of interleague play and how he would improve it. I agree with his idea of moving 1 NL team to the AL, but I disagree with his choice of moving The Houston Astros.

Here's my plan:
Yes, move 1 team from the NL to the AL. But make it the Pittsburg Pirates. Then you would have an interleague rivalry between the Pirates and the Phillies. Rivalry is an important part of my plan. There are already geographic rivalries between 10 of the 15 pairs which would be created. Yankees-Mets, Rays-Marlins, Orioles-Nationals, Indians-Reds, Royals-Cardinals, White Sox-Cubs, Twins-Brewers, Rangers-Astros, Angels-Dodgers,A's-Giants and the aforementioned Phillies-Pirates. That leaves 4 teams in each league without a geographic rival. We could pair the Red Sox & Braves as the Braves started in Boston before moving to Milwaukee and then to Atlanta. That leaves 3 teams in each league with no ties to create a rivalry. So we'll pair up the Mariners-Padres (West Coast), Detroit - Rockies and Blue Jays-Diamondbacks. Without a more radical realignment of the leagues, this is the best I can come up with.

Realignment: Move Pittsburg from the NL Central to the AL Central and return the Royals to the AL west. Not perfect, but makes sense to me.

Schedule: Interleague portion- Each team plays 4 games (2 home, 2 away) against it's "Interleague Rival". Each team also plays 6 games (3+3) against the 5 teams in an interleague Division. If the rival team is in that division then they play the rival team 10 times that year. That also makes it so that each opposite league team is seen every three years in the regular season. That is a total of 34 games so far. The remaining 128 games are 12 games against the 4 divisional opponents, and 8 games against the remaining 10 teams in their league. That is my map to 162 games. I think this would establish rivalries and increase interest.

No payment required, MLB, but you could toss me some free tickets when you adopt my plan.
